Morning Assembly, Tuesday, November 4th at 8:30-9am
For the past three years, Matoaka Little Eagle, aTeaching Artist with The Vanaver Caravan, has worked with our fourth graders at Mountain Laurel, sharing her deep knowledge and passion for Indigenous culture—both local and across the United States. An extraordinary culture bearer and Teaching Artist with The Vanaver Caravan since the 1980s, Matoaka brings stories, songs, and dance that connect students to rich traditions.
All are welcome to join our Morning Assembly on Tuesday, November 4th from 8:30-9am in the Community Room! We will open with a short land acknowledgement, followed by the Seventh Generation Song (with everyone invited to sing the chorus), and enjoy dancing with the fourth graders to Gadasho. The story of Rainbow Crow will be shared, and we’ll close together with either a round dance or the Anishinaabe water song.
MATOAKA LITTLE EAGLE:
Tewa, Apache, and Chickahominy, is a culture bearer of diverse Native American cultures. A Native singer, dancer, storyteller, Matoaka Little Eagle introduces Native cultures in America, promoting respect, tolerance, and celebration.
In 2022, she played the role of Grandma Jingle Dress in the award-winning contemporary Native musical premier of “Distant Thunder”, at the First Americans Museum in Oklahoma City. She has collaborated with David Amram, Pete Seeger, John Sebastian, John Cage, Pura Fe Ensemble, Ulali, Spider Woman Theater, Louis Mofsie, the Thunderbird American Indian Dancers,The Swift Eagle Dance Troupe, The World of Music and Dance in Toronto, The Vanaver Caravan, bringing great joy and inspiration to her audiences.
She has performed at Lincoln Center, The American Museum of Natural History, The Museum of the American Indian, Town Hall, Clearwater Festival, Symphony Space, Carnegie Hall, The Cathedral of St. John the Divine, Theater for the New City, United Nations International School, and numerous colleges and cultural institutions.
Currently, she is creating unique music with Julia Howl Haines (harper extraordinaire) in our duo of RiverSong. With Julia and Bob Goldberg (Famous Accordions of the Universe) in the UpRiver Trio.
