Understanding CyberCivics in the Waldorf Middle-School Program
WHAT IS CYBERCIVICS?
CyberCivics is a comprehensive, middle-school curriculum designed to teach students not only how to use digital technologies but, more importantly, how to navigate them thoughtfully, ethically, and responsibly.
THE WALDORF APPROACH TO TECHNOLOGY AND CYBERCIVICS
Waldorf education values the development of the whole child: head, heart, and hands. When we introduce CyberCivics, we do so with a focus on fostering the skills students will need to engage thoughtfully and critically with the digital world. It’s about helping them understand how and why they should use technology, while promoting digital balance, ethics, and the importance of in-person connections.
CyberCivics in our school is built around two key themes, which mirror many of the values Waldorf holds dear:
1. Digital Citizenship (7th Grade):
This focuses on understanding how to behave safely and ethically online. Students learn about online etiquette, the consequences of cyberbullying, privacy, and the long-lasting impact of their digital footprints. It’s about fostering respect for others in the digital realm, just as we would in face-to-face interactions.
2. Information Literacy (8th Grade):
Here, students learn how to critically evaluate the information they encounter online. This includes recognizing legitimate websites, understanding bias in digital content, and identifying credible sources. In a world flooded with information, these skills are crucial for helping students become discerning, thoughtful consumers of digital media. We will also engage in discussions of AI—the ethics of it, the usefulness of it, but also the downside of it, meaning plagiarism.
