This winter, the students of Mountain Laurel Waldorf School are planting something extraordinary. Seed of Light is an original, student-made puppet production that honors the brilliance of African civilizations, the resilience of Black American history, and the radiant creativity of children.
From backdrop to blossom, puppet to prop, everything in this performance is handcrafted—created by children in grades 3 through 8 during six weeks of after-school workshops. But more than a puppet show, Seed of Light is a weaving of legacy, a celebration of community, and a living act of remembrance.
The Story
Seed of Light begins in the Golden Age of Africa, where learning, trade, and culture flourished. A seed—symbolic and sacred—journeys across the vast ocean, carrying memories of culture and tradition. It travels through sorrow, silence, and heartbreak before finding a new home. Nurtured by song, patience, determination, and hope, the seed begins to blossom.
At the center of the story stands the ancient Baobab tree, where animal spirits gather to offer their gifts—placing them at the roots so that the story may grow anew.
Made by Many Hands
- Backdrops and puppet silks are dyed, sewn, and sculpted by children and mentors.
- Props include glowing fireflies, tiny scrolls, and bundles of goods.
- Live music is composed and performed by community and school members, inspired by African rhythms and folk traditions.
- Movement and staging reflect Waldorf principles of eurythmy and reverence for the seasons of life.
- Every element invites the audience to slow down, feel deeply, and remember the power of collective creation.

Seed of Light is guided by the Voices for Inclusion & Equity (VIE) group and supported by our dedicated after-school faculty and families. We’re honored to partner with SUNY New Paltz’s Department of Black Studies, who help deepen cultural context through mentorship and dialogue.
The performance will serve as a fundraiser for the Margaret Wade Lewis Center, a beacon of education, legacy, and local history.
